How exciting! This is where 5th grade students will be posting some of their work! I feel this will really motivate the students and get them more interested in materials we read. Stay tuned for the first question!
Robots in Homes?
In Scholastic News it was predicted that every household will have a robot by 2025 to assist with household activities. Would you like a robot in your home? Explain why or why not. Write 3-5 sentences by April 8.
More Physical Education?
We recently read in Scholastic about how more physical education may be required. What do you think? Answer yes or no AND explain your answer.
A Jump on the Iditarod
ATTENTION STUDENTS: If you would like to receive extra credit in Reading for the second quarter, I have an activity for you to do! In March we will do a unit on the Alaskan Iditarod. The students really enjoyed this unit last year! I want you to begin researching the Iditarod now so we will have some background information when we get started. Research the Alaskan Iditarod and post some information you found interesting or that is new to you. If you find a short video clip about the Iditarod, I can help you post it to the blog. You may also bring in books or materials about the Iditarod for extra credit. This is the only extra credit that will be offered for the second quarter. The due date will be Friday, January 22. Let me know if you have questions!
Connection to the Herdmans
We need to continue working on making connections when we read. There have been many events that have happened in The Best Christmas Pageant Ever. Choose one event you can connect to. Tell me how you can connect to the story and how your connection is like the story. Be descriptive by adding detail. Some prompts could be as follows:

Connection to John Henry
How can you relate or connect to John Henry? Have you seen a movie or read a book that reminds you of John Henry? If so, what was the name of the movie or book and how does it relate? Or, have you gave something your all and succeeded? Tell how you can connect and how it relates to the story.
Should School Days Be Longer?
The President and U.S. Secretary of Education want U.S. kids to spend more time in school. They say longer school days would give U.S. students more time to learn, and test scores would rise. Others disagree. What do you think? Should school days be longer? Explain your answer in 3-4 sentences.
The Great Depression
In Scholastic we read about the Great Depression. How would you feel if you were living during the Great Depression? What kind of problems would your family have had? How might life be different for you and your family?
